Shopping Japanese

After our delicious feast of black pig tonkatsu, sushi, and Japanese ramen at Tampopo, Ate, Carlos and I decided to get some dessert. We explored Liang Court Shopping Centre trying to look for a dessert shop. We were aimlessly walking when I asked them if we could drop by the Japanese grocery down by the basement. I remembered going to that Japanese supermarket a couple of times when Ate was staying at Somerset.

I have always wanted to visit Japan. The thing is, I hear it’s quite expensive and I have neither the time nor the money. So I guess going inside a Japanese grocery is the closest thing I can get to experiencing Japanese culture. I tried exploring Japantown once in San Francisco, but, for some reason, this grocery was offering a different experience.

Meidi-Ya Supermarket caters to the significant Japanese population in Clarke Quay. It has a lot of their products ranging from fresh produce to snacks, from cleaning agents to household equipment, from bottled beverages to Japanese magazines. With a lot of Japanese shopping around, you can easily imagine you’re in one of Tokyo’s corner supermarkets.

I love going Meidi-Ya. Kahit mostly tingin lang. The prices are quite prohibitive, even for Singaporeans. It’s nice to ogle at weird-looking trinkets, admire cute and ingenious knick-knacks, and guess what a product actually is just by looking at pictures or anime drawings. Aliw.
